If Only I Had Someone To Talk To

How Life Coaching Can Help Older Teenagers Or Those Finishing Their Education

How many of us reach a point in our lives and look back wistfully, wishing we had done something differently? Wishing someone had guided us, that we had had the courage to follow our own dreams and ambitions, purpose in life, rather than that imposed on us by our parents, teachers, society?

Although it is never too late to change direction (and a Life Coach can help you do that at any age), wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t have to reach a certain age before we fulfil our potential and realise what we were meant to achieve with our unique talents and gifts?

Teenagers are under considerable pressure these days, one aspect of which is the increasing number of public exams they are now confronted with. Maybe they would be more motivated if they could understand the long-term benefits of these by looking at their overall goals and objectives and then viewing their education from a different perspective

Having completed their GCSEs, some may need to decide on which subjects to continue at AS level. Those having completed their ASs, may need to choose which subject to drop and then of course to decide if they want to continue with education and if so, which university/college course to pursue.

Those who have gone on to Further Education may feel confused that, having studied hard for so long, they now have a degree or further education qualification and don’t know quite how to progress on a career path. Some may know they have a deep passion and yet cannot see a way forward with it.

A Life Coach can help create the mental space to allow for clarity of thought so that options become apparent, in a way which also takes account of the reality of the situation. Asking, “What do you want out of life?” and, “What will having that something give you?” is the first step towards finally taking some action that puts you in control of your own life.

Anyone reading this article can do the following, two minute exercise:

  • Write down three things you have always wanted to do, be or have, but haven’t got around to, or have dismissed as impossible. These can be as simple or as complex as you like. Don’t think too long.
  • Write down the reasons why you think you haven’t done these things – then be completely honest and ask yourself - are these reasons or excuses?
  • Next think about what you could do that would take you nearer to doing, being or having what you would like – either for all three goals, or just one of them.
  • If you decide that it is worthwhile going for these goals, put a date in your diary for when you are going to take the first step towards achieving them.
  • Then every day do something (however small) towards your goal(s). Make a phone call. Buy the book. Ask an expert. Find a website – do anything to move you forward and make you feel in charge.

Do you want reasons or results? It is very easy to find reasons (excuses) why we can’t do, be or have something. A Life Coach can guide and support you to prove that you CAN!
